We love the idea of balance – it means we’ve got our sh*t together and everything is in harmony, right?

  • Balanced eating.
  • Work-life balance.
  • Balancing the spinning plates.
  • Balancing our mood.

So, can you really balance hormones with food?

In this scenario, this is where language can get misleading.

I don’t talk about balancing hormones because in truth, the body does that itself.

My inner organs, such as my pancreas, kidneys or ovaries are likely watching so-called balancing foods hit my digestive system, and laughing.

Wow, that kale really fancies itself, doesn’t it. Apparently, alongside cherries and avocados it’s whipping all our hormones into shape. Stand down lads, we don’t need to use those negative feedback loops and complex physiological processes, the kale has us covered.

My issue with the term balancing is it makes us visualise food doing more than it can, which perhaps adds to the pressure we put on ourselves when we think we’ve fallen short?

BUT…

How food affects our hormones

When we put food into context and we think about ALL foods and not just WHAT they are but HOW we’re eating them and WHY, we start to build a healthy foundation that enables our hormones to be harnessed.

It’s a subtle but distinct difference.

It’s why I use the term “anchoring” a lot. It’s the name of my signature 1-1 programme and new name for my annual group programme. If you’re reading this between the 14th and 20th September, get in quick here!

Can you reset your hormones with diet?

Food isn’t medicine, but our relationship with it matters.

Loads of things screw this up though, e.g.

  • The scales
  • The stress
  • The symptoms
  • The Special K diet
  • The 90s generally

Anchoring ourselves with good habits and a better food relationship helps us to do many things including:

  • Regulate our weight.
  • Nourish well in all senses.
  • Feel energised for life.

I don’t design programmes that promise you’ll shed loads of pounds as the main outcome, because there’s more to it than that. You will shed a lot of baggage though. And feel all the better for it.

One of my clients described my approach as “a guiding light for me at this point in my life”.

If you’re done with bobbing around in the ocean all by yourself, come anchor with me and others just like you.
